Level of Sexual Knowledge, Attitudes, and Contraceptive Awareness among Senior High School Students

Abstract

Adolescence represents a critical developmental stage characterized by the onset of sexual exploration, which exposes young people to significant public health risks, including unintended pregnancies, unsafe abortions, and the transmission of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). This study aims to determine the level of sexual knowledge, attitudes, and contraceptive awareness among senior high school students of Muertegui National High School. A cross-sectional research design was utilized, involving 148 Grade 11 and 12 students selected through stratified random sampling. The researchers used a validated questionnaire to gather data, which were statistically analyzed using weighted mean and percentage distribution. Results revealed that most respondents demonstrated a moderate level of knowledge regarding sexual health and contraception, with a generally positive attitude toward reproductive health education. However, misconceptions about fertility and contraceptive methods persisted among some students. The findings also indicated that while students were aware of various contraceptive methods, actual understanding and practical awareness remained limited. It is concluded that comprehensive sexuality education should be strengthened within the school curriculum to address misconceptions and enhance reproductive health awareness. It is recommended that the school implement a comprehensive sexuality education program that integrates scientific, emotional, and social aspects of reproductive health to strengthen students’ understanding and awareness.
