Electrolytes are fundamental to osmolality, membrane potential, muscle, nerve excitability, and buffering of acidosis; all being critical determinants of athletic performance. Commercial attention to electrolytes often focuses on hydration, yet their physiological importance extends to neuromuscular coupling, cardiac rhythm, and metabolic regulation. The present review consolidates contemporary literature to emphasize mechanistic understanding and practical applications for athletes.
